Every year at E3, it’s the same thing. There are dozens of games, even more announcements, hands-on demos and oceans of swag. But the big matchup comes down to two companies: Microsoft and Sony. The platform holders for Xbox and PlayStation have been at it for years, their barely differentiated products forced to compete on showmanship and stagecraft. This year, Microsoft walked into the fight with a big new advantage: it had a new console to show off, and Sony didn’t. And so yesterday Microsoft showed off the Xbox One X, previously known as Project Scorpio. Tonight, Sony fires back, or doesn’t. Sony still has the opportunity to walk out of this fight the victor by doing the same thing it always does.
