All in all, Overwatch continues to feel unique regardless of how much time you spend with it, and despite the low number of available modes to participate in. I’m genuinely impressed by what Blizzard has managed to do here, and I think you will be too.

With accessibility to spare, a real commitment to diversity and an infectious sense of innocent fun, Overwatch feels like an important game — the sort that can bridge boundaries in the oft-segmented gaming community. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that this may just be the project to revitalize lapsed or disheartened gamers’ interest in the medium, or the one to bring new players onboard the FPS wagon.

The heroes are varied, unique, and powerful enough to offer a tactical team experience that rivals the likes of Rainbow Six: Siege, but is more forgiving and encouraging of players to take risks and rethink their strategy at every checkpoint.

95

The best Hero shooter ever and the coolest competitive shooter of recent years is brought to us by a developer that has never even made a shooter before. Overwatch brings online fun for anybody, no matter how experienced or how old you are. This might be the game of the year.

95

An incredible game that should be enjoyed by everyone, and the most fun I’ve had with a shooter in years. Brimming with personality, the only concerns are longevity, and how dependent it is on other players to make the game fun.

94

Simply the best multiplayer shooter to come along in years. Pure, joyous fun. [July 2016, p.74]

It might not have the most exhaustive list of maps and modes, but it provides nearly endless opportunities for exhilarating, coordinated play. When you’re at the center of it, it feels like nothing else.

Finally, Blizzard has a brand new franchise. Overwatch is a brilliant FPS based on heroes. It’s competitive matches with tons of adrenaline, makes it one of the most enjoyable experiences of the year. Super precise controls, completely different playable characters, outstanding level design and a great work on art direction, are top level elements of this great game.

That the game hangs together visually is remarkable; that it should cohere so well in design terms, unfathomable. [Aug 2016, p.104]

Blizzard’s addictive and tactical team-based shooter is essential – the character-switching mechanic sweetens the genre. Group up with friends to avoid clueless carnage and enjoy the true game. [Aug 2016, p.82]

Truly exceptional presentation, oodles of tactical nuance, and a rich universe. Blizzard’s first ever FPS can keep up with the genre big boys and then some. [August 2016, p70]

Another high quality and especially polished game from Blizzard, Overwatch will keep you in its online arenas for many hours to come thanks to its extremely fun gameplay and the vast and entirely diverse cast of characters. As many (almost) only online titles it has its own share of balancing issues but not significant enough to distract from the fun.

90

With a focus on exquisite gameplay, Overwatch has asserted itself as the new standard not only in team-based shooters, but esports as a whole.

90

Overwatch is not typically my kind of game. Not by any measure. But the fact that I’ve been having so much fun with it that I’ve been playing it over some other games that I worship (but can’t quite mention yet) is testament to just how well Blizzard has done with this one. Bravo guys – someone has finally created a shooter I care about enough to actually want to play after finishing the review.

90

Even though the visual design is a standout, the shining stars in Overwatch are without a doubt its heroes, not to mention their wonderfully varied weapons and abilities.

90

A collection of firsts, but it carries itself with the confidence and proficiency of a veteran. It has plenty of room to grow and expand, but as our first step into this world, it’s inviting, competitive, smartly designed, beautiful to look at, and fun to play. You can’t ask for much more than that.

90

The more you play Overwatch the more you realise Blizzard thought of basically everything you might criticise it for.

90

For multiplayer aficionados, Overwatch is essential. It’s the kind of game worth sacrificing entire evenings to play and the kind of game you won’t be able to stop thinking about, even when you’re away. Although the lack of a singleplayer component will deter some, there’s more than enough mileage to be had from twelve maps and 21 heroes available.

90

With its fun gameplay and an amazing charisma for standing out, Overwatch is the best candidate for the “best competitive FPS” title this year. Blizzard has done a gorgeous job working on this title, creating a shiny box full of a deep and interesting lore, an outstanding design and tons of fun.

90

Blizzard hasn’t done anything new here, but what they have done is taken the genre of “shooty-shooty, bang-bang” and injected a dose of colour and personality, delivering a game that’s enjoyable, eye-catching and crammed with just the right amount of depth and accessibility that will grant a tremendous amount of replay value to establish an audience.

90

The Street Fighter of online shooters is an inspired new take on familiar ideas, that proves personality really does go a long way.

90

What’s incredible about Overwatch is how every single aspect of the game presented holds the same remarkably high level of detail and polish, and though the lack of progression systems and small selection of game modes may limit the experience for some in the long term, in the short to medium term, this game is nothing short of amazing.

90

Overwatch is a great multiplayer game with a lot of charisma. Its 21 different characters bring variety to the situations that can be given in combat and it’s technically outstanding. Blizzard has done it again.

90

Overwatch is a beautiful game. In dedicating itself to one strong, singular style of game rather than attempting to check too many boxes with heaps of modes and features, Blizzard has crafted a finely tuned and instantly playable production. It is a game of exceptional vision, a vision realized with utmost self-assurance. This game knows what it is, and doesn’t try to be anything else.

90

Overwatch has the potential to be the most important and influential FPS for this generation. At the moment, it’s doubtlessly the game of this summer.

88

Overwatch takes influences from a great many games to make a brand new online experience, which is very funny and has great quality. Blizzard’s new game is a complete success.

86

Overwatch needs more content. Right now the game does not justify its price although we know Blizzard will expand it. This hero shooter maintains a perfect balance of gameplay and it has charismatic characters, but perhaps its sales model has not been adequate.

83

I can’t believe I am playing Overwatch, again, and again. I can easily say that, I’m addicted to its well-made characters, fun gameplay and charming atmosphere. Graphics are well polished with remarkably good performance on all platforms. Keep up the good work Blizzard.

80

Blizzard once again proves they’re capable of anything, delivering an amazing colorful shooter that’s worth every penny you spend on it. Shame there’s no single-player mode though; we’d love to know more about these characters.

80

Despite only a handful of maps, no story, and no ranking system upon release, Overwatch more than makes up for all of that with its masterful focus on teamwork. The game is clearly designed with teamwork at its heart, which is a major strength, but can also lead to frustrations for any lone wolf gamers.

80

Blizzard and their team seem to have struck gold with a perfect combination of class based, team-centric first person shooting with their latest entry in their storied career. They show that in an era of overpriced and overwrought online only first person shooters, Overwatch stands out above the fray, to deliver a meaningful, competitive experience sure to last for years to come.

Game Reviews from around the web

Overwatch’s strongest aspect is how it manages to constantly teach you something new. Each match reveals another detail you might have previously ignored–the audio cue that signals McCree’s lethal Deadeye attack; the sound a stalwart Bastion makes when entering its dangerous turret form. Playing Overwatch is a digging process, and finding new layers is part of what makes it special. It’s not impressive that Overwatch tries so many different things–it’s outstanding that it succeeds in every attempt.

Good

  • Infinite replayability
  • Team focused
  • Tons of characters
  • Best shooter of 2016

Bad

  • A few characters seem to be less effective or rarely used
  • No Starcraft inspired characters yet...

Summary

The more you play Overwatch the more you realize Blizzard thought of everything. A must play.
